What is Carraige Driving

Carriage Driving encompasses:

Show Driving

Show driving events are often termed harness classes. Usually seen at agricultural shows and Royal shows and split into light and heavy harness. In turnout, the harness, pony/horse, vehicle and total appearance is taken into consideration when judged.

Classes in light harness can be based on horse/pony height, vehicle type, whither the horses/ponies driven in singles or multiples, and driver. Heavy harness classes are usually trade or business's turnouts, and soften based on the vehicle.

Combined Driving Events (CDE)

Said to be "The most fun you can have sitting down" comprises of the sections:

A. Driven dressage
B. Marathon, with obstacles
C. Cones

Usually held over a two days, and can be held indoors. It is similar to ridden eventing. All equines have to be aged 4 and above to compete.

Driven Dressage

Quote from the ACDS site:

The object of the dressage test is to judge the freedom, regularity of pace, harmony, impulsion, suppleness, lightness, ease of movement and correct bending of horses and ponies on the move.

This can be a stand alone event or part of a CDE. The arena can be 100 x 40 m for open and multiples (more than 1 horse) or 80 x40m for novice.

Pleasure Driving

Drives, for no other purpose than pleasure, to enjoy the countryside at a leisurely pace. Often going on rail trails, private land and even beaches. Usually ending in a lunch or a campfire with like-minded company.
